Summary:Autonomous vehicle (AV) is a revolutionary technological advancement in transportation sector. Since the capability of sensing its environment and navigating without human input is required, autonomous driving is indeed an interdisciplinary challenge involving transportation and traffic management, communication and control theory, and computer science technology. With its foreseen huge potential, a variety of research programs were launched to analytically and experimentally study the impact of AV on existing transportation system, especially for its impact on safety and traffic flow characteristics. While most previous studies are conducted in controlled environments such as idealized road configurations with centralized management, AV will be deployed gradually and will have to travel together with legacy vehicles in the coming decades. In this Final Year Project, studies are carried out to simulate the mixed traffic flow in NTU campus. Simulation of real world networks and traffic flow will be set up in SUMO (Simulation of Urban MObility), to both qualitatively and quantitatively study the impacts of deploying AV on safety and traffic flow characteristics within NTU. The experimental results in general show a reduction of traffic jam and its impact on travel time with the increasing proportion of AV.
