| Summary: | This thesis is an attempt to illustrate the conception of sexuality in Indian society during the middle period (first to sixth century CE). To this end, extant Buddhist Vinaya texts transmitted to China will be studied as a source which present—to a certain extent, the social reality and societal perception on important issues regarding gender and sex in middle period India. Through the lens of monastic community in the Vinaya, sexual normativity and deviances construed by the Indians will be explored, with an emphasis on gender, sex, sexual partners and sexual behaviours. |
