description | The paper reviews the exploration of electrification in the aerospace industry, working with the constraints of the existing technology; battery capacity and the aerospace regulations namely EASA and FAA. It adapts the workings and lessons learnt from the previously developed Marine Power System Evaluation Tool (MPSET) to develop a user interface-based auto model for aerospace application: Aerospace Power System Evaluation Tool (APSET). The aerospace industry is inching towards a more electric architecture in pursuit of the benefits it liberates. The vision of the aerospace industry is to develop a fully electric next generation aircraft with an intermediate objective of enabling a more hybrid-based architecture. The basic power system architecture involves around AC, DC or AC and DC bus arrangement with flexibility of component placement, but the main challenges identified in this paper is to attain maximum power density without compromising basic features, safety in the aircraft and working around the laws and legislation in the relatively new frontier that has not been explored. |
