description The objective of this final year project report is to elaborate on the entire process of developing a technology that can capture cross-sectional images of tree trunks. The report will cover the author's contribution to the project over the past two semesters. The target of the project is seeking to develop a technology similar to Computed Tomography that allows users to more visually understand the structure inside the trunk and to accurately locate the damage if it exists. First of all, the report will introduce some project-related basic information and preparations, such as the principles of microwave propagation and how to use MATLAB to create a simple tree trunk model. Then there is the program for simulating microwave axial tomography of trunks and obtain some of the data. Next is the derivation of some formulas, using the data obtained by the simulation program gets the dielectric constant inside the trunk. Finally, using the obtained dielectric constant carries on image reconstruction. The report will provide some results and comparisons of image reconstruction and discuss the accuracy of image reconstruction at different number of scanning angles. In the end, the report will make a list of the advantages and disadvantages of this technology and provide some recommendations for future research.
