description Purpose: Obesity is a growing issue worldwide, especially in adolescents. It is crucial for actions to be taken earlier in life as it is a risk factor for harmful diseases. Hence, the purpose of this study is to investigate the obstacles faced and strategies used by formerly overweight adolescents to transition to a healthier and more physically active lifestyle. It is also hypothesized that autonomous types of motivation rather than controlled were adopted during this period of change. Methods: Seven formerly overweight adolescents that are presently of a healthy weight and physically active for at least the past one year were interviewed. Interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed for common themes. Results: The main themes identified for the obstacles faced were categorized into external and individual obstacles. Similarly, the strategies used were categorized into external and individual interventions. In addition, participants tended to adopt more controlled forms of motivation during their transitioning phase. Conclusion: The findings serves to create awareness and as an inspiration to individuals who are currently working towards a healthier lifestyle. Health practitioners can also use the findings to help in planning programs to tackle obesity.
