Summary: | The main challenge of pterygium surgery is to prevent recurrence. It has
been reported that the conjunctival transplant autograft using fibrin glue is the
most effective method in reducing the recurrence rate (3-14%) in primary
pterygium and less complications. However, the ideal procedure to reducing
recurrence rate in recurrent pterigium not been established yet. Fibrin glue is a
tissue adhesive glue that shorten the duration of the operation, reduce
inflammation and recurrence. The purpose of this study is to determine
differences of recurrence rate after conjunctival autograft attach by fibrin glue in
primary and recurrent pterygium.
Fifty patients consisted of 25 patients of primary pterygium and 25
patients of recurrent pterygium were conducted conjunctival autograft with MMC
application and attached with fibrin glue. Clinical assessment and documentation
with digital cameras that have been standardized at 2 days post-surgery, 1 week, 2
weeks, 4 weeks-2 months and every month up to 6 months.
Recurrence obtained in 2 patients (4%) in the recurrent pterigium, but
there was no statistically significant differences between the two groups. The
propotion of subconjunctival haemorrhage were significant differences on day 2
and the first week. However, there was no statistically significant in weeks 2 and
4. The study found no statistically significant differences in the degree of
inflammation between the two groups.
In conclusion, the proportion of recurrence was higher in recurrent group
compared to the primary, however, there were no statistically significant between
the two groups.
