creation of inside people and outside people and its construction on social structure.
The aim of this research is to investigate what kind of Pempek is apropriate to be
used as a culinary icon for Palembang City from the point of view of �Wong Kito�.
Research object of this thesis is the �Wong Kito� with various background
and profession. This research used qualitatif approach with the asumption from
philosophy perspective is constructivisme and using the strategy of ethnographic.
Moreover, in order to translate that strategy into the real practice, the author used
interview and observation as a method.
From the analysis it is found that the construction of identity of �Wong Kito�
in correlation with pempek as the culinary icon of Palembang City is constructed
specifically through the history of the existance of �Wong Kito� itself in Palembang
City, their behavior and social habit in daily life especially from culinary aspect and
reciprocal development which is binding each other between �Wong Kito� and
pempek. It is also found that pempek produced by, distributed by and consumed by
�Wong Kito� has a double role as a cultural product and a market product for
Palembang people. Moreover, the dispute of authority concerning pempek as an icon
for Palembang City emerges because of three things, namely (1) manufacturer and
