Summary:Bajang Kole is a type of traditional shadow theatre in Madura, as a national heritage that contains many moral attitude, ethics and philosophy of its supporters. The growth and development of Javanese shadow theatre type in the history of puppetry and also traditional shadow theatre itself is not accompanied by the growth of Pamekasan's (Madura) bajang kole traditional art. Traditional art theater existence is not widely known, so it needs to be documented for its preservation and development. This study aims to determine the form, function and meaning of the Pamekasan's (Madura) Bajang Kole performance. Based on the quality of its data, this study is a qualitative research with a multidisciplinary approach that is arranged by several theories and concepts, including puppetry dramaturgy, anthropology (the function of art performing), sociology (social change) and communication (school of semiotics). Its aggregation data method consists of library research, observation, interviews and audio visual library. The historical and ethnographic tracking in this study is conducted to get a comprehensive description about Bajang Kole at Pamekasan (Madura). The analysis result in this study indicates that the bbajang kole developments can not be separated with topèng dhâlâng in Madura. Aesthetic concept of the show Pamekasan's (Madura) bajang kole is not refers to the tradition of classic puppetry so it is different from traditional shadow theatre in Java. Bajang kole has social functions and meanings in the context of community life. Those functions include ritual functions, personal entertainment and social communication, presentation and aesthetic activities (cultural sustainability), education mediums, economic activities. The meaning can be observed on the aesthetic elements and determined by its activities context. Complex valued aesthetic form, function and meaning are not touching the joints of the social life of society, ideological views, technology progression, and also the lack of participation of stakeholders, make this art is less developed.
