Summary: | The study entitled Particles in Indonesian Informal Variety aims at describing the
concept, identification and use of particles in informal Indonesian, explain the function,
and the meaning of particles in Indonesian.
This study is a descriptive qualitative study. The data were taken from everyday
findings as the primary data source and movie, novel, reality show or talk show program
using informal Indonesian as the secondary data sources. This study used Natural
Semantic Metalanguage approach focusing on the environment of the particles, function,
and the meaning of particles. Besides, this study was based on semantic and pragmatic
theory as the study of meaning.
The result of the study shows that Indonesian at least has 10 particles which is used
in informal conversation. They are ah, deh, dong, kan, kek, kok, lah, lho, sih, and ya.
Those particles can occupy the medial or final position. However, only ah, kan, kok, lho,
and ya can be in the initial position. In the medial position, particles can only be placed
after or before phrase(s) and can not be inserted in phrase(s). The function of particles is
influenced by its position in sentence, the type of sentence, and the intonation. Some
particles play the same function in Indonesian language. Nevertheless, they have semantic
characteristic to differentiate them. This characteristics is a means of figuring out the
meaning of particles in Indonesian language. The meaning of particles depends on its
context, including the context of use in sentence, intonation, and the context of situation
of the utterance. Therefore, particles has a wide range of meaning.
