| description | There is a reciprocal relationship called by tradition of nyumbang in the village people
of Merdikorejo. This reciprocal relationship take places continuously, alternately, and
runs among the generations. It is hard to change the tradition due to the strict social
control implemented by gossips and negative assessments for the people who did not
perform the tradition of nyumbang, and it is also related closely to their prestige and status.
Based on the problem, it was conducted this study concerning on how were the social
economic influences of nyumbang tradition in the village people of Merdikorejo by
considering firstly how was the description of nyumbang tradition there.
This study used the theory of reciprocity exchange as a reference. This theory has a
main essence of the happening reciprocity exchange among individus or groups. This
study used a qualitative approach. Data gathering was conducted by performing a method
of observational participation, conducting close interview to the informants, directly
observation in the field, and literally study. The selected informants was conducted by the
technic of snowballing that did not limit the number of informants. The informant
characteristic was determined based on the previous recommendation of the informants.
The interviewed informants were the village officials, socialites, religious figures, and also
people from various stratums and occupations.
The study found that in the village of Merdikorejo, both people who performed and
received the tradition of nyumbang possessed responsibilities. The influence of nyumbang
to the social life of village people of Merdikorejo was they considered the tradition of
nyumbang as a part of kinship ties or social emotion. It would make close the relationship
among people from various status levels through the tradition of nyumbang. It was known
from the achieved data that in the tradition of nyumbang, it could meet directly brothers,
sisters, friends, and neighbours, and they would be more close each other. If someone was
invited to perform the tradition of nyumbang, even if he sometimes objected, he would feel
happy finally because of the invitor treated him as a friend or a family. Economically, the
influence of the tradition of nyumbang was high intensity of performance the tradition of
nyumbang in the village of Merdikorejo would make them save their funds in order to
meet their needs. The tradition of nyumbang is not just the responsibility of people with
low economic level, it is also the responsibility of people with intermediate and high
economic level. |
