Summary: | Teater Gandrik is a theatre group that is succeed in combining
dramaturgy of West theatre and aesthetic of Javanese theatre,
especially Dagelan Mataram and conventional ketoprak. The
performances of Gandrik Theatre in the play entitled �Orde Tabung�
and �Departemen Borok� were presented in the form of performances
which were attractive and contain improvisation, social criticism,
humor, dances, songs, as well as dialogues which sometimes contain
Javanese vocabulary.
This research used aesthetic theory, art sociology theory, and
theater semiotics theory. The morphology aesthetic theory taken from
Thomas Munro, paradox aesthetic theory from Jakob Sumardjo, and
rasa aesthetic theory from Schechner were used to analyze the
structure and texture of �Orde Tabung� and �Departemen Borok�
performances. Theory of art sociology was used to analyze sociohistorical
factor causing Gandrik theatre has aesthetic derived from
Javanese theater. Theories of theater semiotics from Tadeus Kowzan,
Keir Elam, Fischer Lichte, Aston and Savona were used to analyze the
meaning of performances.
The results of this research show that aesthetic of Gandrik
Theatre in the performances of �Orde Tabung� and �Departemen
Borok� were combination of the elements of realism of West theatre
and those of Javanese theatre, especially from Dagelan Mataram and
ketoprak. Gandrik Theatre can be considered as an Indonesian
aesthetic theatre. The combination between the elements of West and
East theatre�s dramaturgies which are actually paradox has resulted
complete and attractive performances.
Indonesia�s socio-political conditions that were repressive in
New Order and corruptive in Reformation Era encourage the creation
of the play entitled �Orde Tabung� and �Departemen Borok�. The
selection of Gandrik Theatre�s aesthetic which was explored from the
elements of Javanese theatre was caused by the spirit of creating an
Indonesian-featured aesthetic.
The meanings of the performance played by Gandrik Theatre
related to the matters of marginalizing minority group, marginal
people, and pro-democracy activists, democratization, corruption
eradicating are so relevant for Indonesian today and world society in
general which some of them also experience marginalization of
minority group, corruption and so on.
