| description | This thesis attempts to trace the process of religious commodification that occurred within pengajian Ar-Rahman, especially through the relationship between Agent Sultan of Brunei Darussalam, Kiai Pesantren and the Bugis people in Bontang, East Kalimantan. The process starts when the Sultan Agents involved into Pengajian managed by Kiai Pesantren by offering a variety of economic benefits (such as gold, money and cheap hajj) to those who are willing to become a member. By using the big names and the charisma of the Sultan of Brunei, Sultan Agents then creates various forms of religious understanding that combines local and Islamic traditions. In practice, each member must meet a variety of economic conditions as a mandatory requirement set by the Agent Sultan.
This research elaborates participant observation and in-depth interviews conducted a three-month in the city of Bontang.Bontang is a city of migrants and a place to hold religious activities of Ar-Rahman. In addition, the data field findings are supported by other literature data.
In conclusion, this thesis notes that religious commodification has occured in the arena of pengajian, especially through the relationship between Agent Sultan, Kiai Pesantren and the Bugis as followers. The biggest consideration of the Bugis migrants to engage in it is because of economic motives that are promised by the agents. Considerations of morality and religiosity are secondary. But ironically, Kiai Pesantren and Bugis people actually exploited by Agents of Sultan through various forms of economic conditions (such as membership fees, making gold plate and strongbox, religious journey) to which they must fulfill before obtaining the promised economic benefits. This thesis is an attempt to uncover the economic practices that has occured in the arena of pengajian . Referring to Kitiarsa, religions as market commodities as well as exchange in the spiritual marketplace occurs in this phenomenon |
