Summary: | Background : Schizophrenia is a mental health disorder which is a health concern
due to reduced productivity in various aspects of life. The prevalence of mental
disorders in Kebumen of 4.1 � or higher than the prevalence of mental disorders in
Central Java that is equal to 3.3 �. Root causes of mental disorder is a factor
somatic, psychological and socio-cultural influence each other constantly. Genetic
factors also play a role of family history as risk factors for the incidence of
schizophrenia. Psychosocial factors associated with the incidence of schizophrenia
among the psychosocial stressors.
Objectives : To determine and analyze the relationships of family history factors and
psychosocial stressors with the incidence of schizophrenia in Kebumen.
Methods : This study is an observational analytic study with case-control study
design by matching for age and sex. Samples are residents who live in Kebumen, as
many as 206 people with a comparison of cases and controls 1: 1. The case was
diagnosed with schizophrenia and outpatient visits in hospitals and community health
centers in Kebumen. Controls were without diagnoses of schizophrenia. Statistically
analysis using McNemar and Conditional Logistic Regression.Â
Results : The result of bivariabel analysis showed interpersonal relationship
problems are a risk factor with a value of OR = 8.8 (p-value = 0.000, 95% CI = 3.49-
28.43), the problem of school/employment OR = 5.8 (p -value = 0.000, 95% CI =
2.21- 19.19), economic status OR = 3.1 (p-value = 0.000, 95% CI = 1.64- 6.07),
education level OR = 2.7 (p-value = 0.0007, 95% CI = 1.44- 5.19), marital status OR
= 11 (p-value = 0.000, 95% CI = 4.44- 35, 21) and employment status OR = 9.2 (pvalue
= 0.000, 95% CI = 3.95-26.05). The results of multivariable analysis showed
that the dominant factor contributing to the incidence of schizophrenia is a
psychosocial stressor interpersonal relationship issues with a value of OR = 9.889
and p-value = 0.003 at 95% CI = 2.145- 45.592.
Conclusion : Schizophrenia is a multifactorial disease associated with psychosocial
stressors and family history by considering other socio demographic factors.
