Summary: | The ceramic of Singkawang West Kalimantan is the cultural
product that deserves appreciation. It is made by the rotating
technique and simple tools. The motif has been stagnant but it has
long-lasting esthetics. What is interesting about this ceramic is
that since long time ago, the motif has not undergone any change
nor any development while other ceramics significantly develop
their design, shape, technique, and function. Another interesting
character is that it maintains ornamental motif which is the
characteristic of Chinese motives of chryssanthemum, peony,
meutan, and lotus. These flowers do not grow in Singkawang. All
artisans make similar motif, especially the expressive dragon motif.
The ceramic is burnt in dragon-shaped stove which is exclusively
found in Singkawang.
