Summary: | This study aims to analyze the market structure, the performance and the
modern retail industry clusters in the greater Jakarta area based on an index of
specialization and what factors are affecting productivity in the industry. The
study uses the method of explorative research. The data used is the 2006 national
economic census data (Listing) and the economic census 2006 sample conducted
in 2007 based on company�s report in May 2007.
The result showed that the market structure of the modern retail industry in
the Greater Jakarta area during the period of 2007 is clasified as an oligopoly with
a high level of concentration because of the values obtained on average over 40%,
the company�s performance both in terms of productivity or value added is still
dominated by the five regions in Jakarta, it shows that the potential of modern
retail industry in Jakarta area still quite large. Industry clusters are analyzed based
on the specialization index indicates that the Tangerang is an area that has a
comparative advantage with the average index of 1,552 and has a high labor
requirement.
Regression analyze result showed that the market share has a significant
positive effect on productivity. The higher market share, the higher the
productivity. This can be interpreted in which the higher market share will further
increase sales and revenues that will ultimately increase productivity. While the
specialization index showed a negative significant effect on productivity, where
the higher the index the lower the productivity of specialization.
