Description
Summary:Background: Urinary tract infection or UTI is one of the infectious diseases that are rarely aware of the parents. Maternal knowledge plays an important role in determining action on infant health problems. Socio-economic factors and hygienic sanitation suspected UTI risk factors in general. Objective: To know about UTIs maternal understanding and relationship with the incidence of UTI in young children of poor families in the slum area of the city of Yogyakarta. Method : This study used mixed methods design, case control design was used to determine the risk factors for UTI and qualitative approach was used to explore mothers comprehension about UTI. Cases were children aged 2-5 years diagnosed with UTI and permanent residence in the two poorest districts in Yogyakarta. The controls are poor toddler diagnosed with UTI negative (not having UTI). The selection of a consecutive sample / quota sampling. Determination of the sample using the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Determination of the incidence of UTI using a urine dipstick test results and assessment of knowledge using a questionnaire and in-depth interviews (qualitative). Data analysis was performed using a test Mc. Nemar to define the relationship between mother's knowledge with the incidence of urinary tract infection, the level of confidence that is used by 95%. Result: There were no differences in baseline characteristics in the two groups studied except for gender of under five. Mothers comprehension associated with the occurrence of UTI (p = 0.033) and is a risk factor with a value of OR 2.08. The qualitative results provide a picture of the mothers comprehension about UTI,the mothers are still lack of understanding of UTI in general. UTI symptoms in general are identified, but the decision to seek treatment immediately is not done unless there are specific symptoms. Other risk factors for UTI were female gender (OR 13.3), non-exclusive breastfeeding (OR 1.5), urinary tract anomalies (OR 1.5), bubble bathing (1.46) and urinate habit in public toilet (OR 1.6). Logistic regression analysis showed lack of understanding of the mother and under five sex (female) together can predict the incidence of UTI is up to 23.86%. Conclusion: Lack of comprehension about UTI among the mothers is an important risk factor for the incidence of UTI in under five children of poor families in the slum area of Yogyakarta municipality. The lack of comprehension among mothers needs to be improved through community-based approaches.
