description Background. Rural areas with low income, such as East Nusa Tenggara, face dificulties of shortage and misdistribution of health professionals. PTT doctors only stay for one to two years and this high rate of mobility hinders health improvement in rural areas. Nevertheless, there are doctors who have stayed for long time in rural areas. What are their reasons? What kind of character they have? Can the characters be shaped through education in medical faculty? Objective. To identify characters of doctor suitable to work in rural, factors influencing rural career choice, the process of character development, and the intervention through medical education. Methods. Qualitative research through phenomenological approach. Subjects were general practitioners who have worked in rural for > ten years. Focused group discussion completed by eight participants. One-to-one indepth interview according to maximum variation sampling criteria completed by 31 participants. Interview results were transcribed and content analysed using Open code 3.6 by two researchers. The coding result were compared between two researchers and grouped into emerging themes and subthemes. Results. Family and self actualization factors play dominan role in rural career choice. The character of doctor also plays a significant role in making decision to come, to stay, or to leave from rural area. Nine types of character were found, and six among them were sugested to be developed through medical education with community oriented curriculum and reflection as the main strategy.
