description This thesis investigates polysemy of lexeme cut from the framework of Cognitive Linguistics. Cognitive Linguistics analyzes a word from its constructions to its senses. This thesis aims at describing (1) the basic grammatical constructions of lexeme cut, (2) the prototype meaning, the semantic extensions of cut, and the idiomatic meaning containing the lexeme cut and (3) the relatedness among the cluster of cuts distinct senses in its semantic network. The data is taken from corpus and dictionary. Corpus provides natural and concrete linguistic data, while dictionary gives easiness in collecting data which is not found in the corpus. The research method used in this study is qualitative-descriptive. The realization of this method is carried out by presenting data preparation, data analysis and the presentation of the findings. The data analysis is consulted to the native speaker of English. The analyzed data is presented by using both formal and informal method. Lexeme CUT can be found in both transitive and intransitive constructions. It is interesting to notice that as a verb, cut can be found in phrasal verb constructions. The extended senses of lexeme show a different behavior grammatically. The verb undergoes conversion to other word classes: noun and adjective. Noun profiles the result of the action of the noun cut. Cut as an adjective describes and modifies nouns. The idiomatic constructions of lexeme cut are also intriguing to elaborate. Based on the component of the idiomatic constructions, the idiom consisting of lexeme cut can be classified into lexical idiom and phrase idiom. The components that construct lexical idiom in the form of compound noun are noun and noun (N + N) and adjective and noun (A + N). The components that construct phrase idiom are verb and noun phrase (V+FN), verb and adjective (V + A), verb, noun and adjective (V+N+A), verb and verb (V + V), verb and prepositional phrase (V + FP) and verb, noun, prepositional phrase (V+N+FP). This lexeme appears in the sentence combining with other elements motivating new senses in the construction. Based on the four criteria by Evans and Tyler, the prototype of cut involves the action of: (1) the motion of AGENT with a sharp instrument, (2) contact between AGENT and PATIENT (3) the change of shape of the PATIENT. This change can be specified that is (4) The PATIENT is divided into some parts (5) the number of PATIENT increases (6) the size of the PATIENT is smaller. The semantic extensions found in this study are 15 senses, those are: 1) to divide, 2) to make shorter, 3) to reduce, 4) to use less, 5) to erase, 6) to make a hole, 7) to wound, 8) to kill, 9) to stop, 10) to cross, 11) to catch up, 12) to isolate, 13) to interrupt, 14) to remove, 15) to influence. The senses of cut found in (1), (2), (5), (6), (7), (8), (10), (11), (12), (14) prototypically have PATIENT with concrete referents. On the other hand, the other senses commonly have PATIENT with abstract referents. It is motivated by metaphorical mapping. It shows that the features of PATIENT in the sentential context are also motivating the sense of this lexeme. The semantic extension to cross has an object whose semantic role is LOCATION. The findings show that besides motivated by metaphorical process, the new senses appear in some contexts because they share similar attributes with the prototype sense. The idiomatic constructions found in this study are divided into two: the transparent idiom and the opaque idiom. Various senses of the lexeme associated by one phonological representation /kᴧt/ can be drawn in the semantic network based on the relationship between the senses. Shared attributes between senses make it possible to see the relatedness between the prototype sense and the extended senses. However, although the relation between opaque idiomatic constructions and their reference is not transparent, most of the constructions that contain lexeme cut reflect the prototype sense. Accordingly, the senses of cut form complex a semantic network.
