Description
Summary:This research, and titled Addressing System of Kinship in Mandarin, aims to describe the addressing system of kinship in Mandarin from the aspects of the classification, the usage of kinship addressing and to explain the factors causing Mandarin language is rich with kinship addressing. The addressing system of kinship in Mandarin is an interesting phenomenon to study from the sociolinguistic perspective. The phenomenon does not deal only with aspect of lingual, but also with aspect of sociocultural. This research was conducted with a qulitative-descriptive approach. The collection and provision of data was done by the method of literature, method of introspection and interview, and method of obsevation and record. The method used in data analysis is the pragmatic, referential identity method and translasional method. The results of this research can be described briefly as follows. First, the kinship terms of address can be classified based on forms and meanings. Second, Mandarin provides various forms of addressing for speakers to use to address their relatives. The selection of the forms in Chinese kinship terms and its variations are influenced by nonlingual factors i.e. lineage, gender, generation, age, ranking, marital status, region of origin and situation. The usage of kinship terms of address is also associated with three addressing rules, i.e. alternation rule, cooccurence rule, and collocation rule. Third, from aspect of non-lingual, the wealth of kinship terms in Mandarin can not be separated from the Chinese philosophy and culture. Besides influenced by philosophy and culture, the richness of kinship address in Chinese is also influenced by lingual factor that absorbed kinship terms of the dialects in China.
