| description | Compound words in Mandarin have different characteristics from other
languages so it is very interesting to study. This study aims to describe the
characteristics of compound words in Chinese, the process of its formation and its
constituent elements, construction of compound words in Mandarin, as well as the
meaning of compound words in Mandarin.
The research method used is descriptive qualitative research method. The
implementation of this method is achieved through the stage of providing data,
analyzing data, and presenting the results of data analysis. Data were analyzed
using descriptive method to describe the compound words in Mandarin. This
study also uses the method of distributional. The results of the data analysis
presented using informal method.
The results of this study can be summarized as follows. Compound words in
Mandarin has a number of characteristics that is, any or all of the principal
elements in the form of words and its elements may not be separated or may not
be altered structure. The meaning of a compound word is fixed.
The root is the element of forming compound words. Root morphemes can
be divided into free root and bound root. Compound words in Mandarin may
consist of a free root and root bound. Process of forming compound words, free
root + free root, bound root + free root and bound roots + bound root.
Compound words in Mandarin have five types of construction, namely, the
type of coordination, the type of subordinative, the type of subject-predicate, the
type of verb-object and the type of X-complement, the type of X-complement
including the type of verb-complement and the type of noun-complement. The
five types of constructions have different characteristics.
The meaning of a compound closely related to the construction, there are
four types. There is the meaning of compound word ab have the same meaning
with both roots, that is ab = A + B = A = B |
