description Vertically oriented ZnO nanorods were prepared in a two steps technique involving the preparation of ZnO seed layer and the growth of well aligned ZnO nanorod by hydrothermal deposition method. The effect of post synthesis washing treatment and hydrothermal quenching were first studied to hinder over deposition on the surface of vertically alligned ZnO nanorods. Effect of the substrates orientation on the growth of ZnO nanorods was also investigated. The hydrothermal deposition was performed at various time of 20, 40, 60 and 120 minutes. The as-prepared ZnO nanorod thin film was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and specular reflectance UV-Visible spectrophotometer. The results show that washing treatment and quenching process is an effective post treatments method to reduce and prevent the formation of ZnO nanorods with a random orientation. ZnO nanorods deposited hydrothermally on facing up glass substrate revealed longer rods than those deposited on facing down position. Diameter, length and density of the rod increased as hydrothermal time increased. Bandgap energy of the resulted ZnO nanorod thin films ranged from 3.69 to 3.79 eV.
