description Green methylation of cellulose using dimethyl carbonate (DMC) with microwave and sonochemistry techniques has been conducted. As the comparison, conventional methylation of cellulose using dimethyl sulfate (DMS) has also carried out. The cellulose used in this study was isolated from sago waste in 86.67% content. All the methylation products were analyzed by means of IR and 1H-NMR spectrometers. The determination of cellulose content was done using standart method of TAPPI T-203, while the determination of the degree of substitution (DS) was based on method of Zeisel. The first stage, conventional methylation of cellulose was performed using DMS, NaOH 50% (w/v) and acetone (volume ratio = 3:10:9) at 50 C, while the green one was done using Na2HPO4 (12:1), DMC and NaCl 5% (w/v) (volume ratio = 10:10) at 90 C. The reaction time was varied (2 to 5 hours) and the optimum condition was reached for 3 hours. It was showed that the green methylation using DMC gave higher DS (1.028) than that of the conventional method using DMS (0.924). The second step, green methylation of cellulose was conducted using Na2HPO4 (12:1), DMC and NaCl 5% (w/v) (volume ratio = 10:10) by employing microwave and sonochemistry techniques. The methylation with microwave was carried out at the power of 400 W for 200 seconds and gave the DS of 1.036. The methylation with sonochemistry (the variation time 1 to 3 hours) was conducted at the optimum time of 2 hours and gave the DS of 0.646. The volume of DMC was also varied, where the volume ratio of DMC of 1:16 gave the highest DS (1.177).
