Summary: | Background. Shifting the world's population of older, is a consequence of the
success of development in the health sector. Depression is an emotional issue that is
often found in the elderly, and sleep disturbance is a sign of old age with symptoms
of depression. Latihan Pasrah Diri (LPD) is part of the Complementary and
Alternative Medicine (CAM) in the management of symptoms of depression that
combines relaxation and remembrance with a focus on breathing exercises and words
contained in dhikir (relaxation and repetitive prayer) to evoke the relaxation response,
so that is expected to improve symptoms of depression and sleep quality
Objective. This study was conduct to determine the effect of LPD on improved sleep
quality in the elderly with depression symptoms.
Methods. This study used a quasi experimental methods, performed in posyandu
lansia Manisrenggo Klaten district in Central Java, between the months of August to
December 2012. Distribution data was tested using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test
statistic (Shapiro-Wilk). The difference in PSQI scores each group by t test for
unpaired groups if the normal distribution or Wilcoxon test when the distribution was
not normal. LPD influence of differences PSQI scores vs the control group were
tested with independent t-test or the Mann Whitney U test depending on the
distribution of the data distribution. Differences were considered significant if p
<0.05 with 95% confidence intervals.
Results. PSQI scores and component sleep disturbances decreased after LPD on the
treatment group (p <0.05). PSQI score improvement is not obtained in the control
group (p> 0.05).
Conclusion. Obtained an improvement of quality sleep and sleep disturbances
components in the treated group, found no improvement in the control group.
