Summary: | This study aims to reveal the narrative of masculinity in the novel Le
rocher de Tanios written by Amin Maalouf. Masculinity is referring to a male
body, but masculinity is not sex and not equal to men. Masculinity itself is built in
the community and related to the local culture. Arab community which is actually
a patriarchal society believes that men should have a masculine values in them.
Narrative masculinity in society demands that men should act according to the
expectation of society. This is what represented in the novel Le rocher de Tanios
by Amin Maalouf. Masculinity is divided into two terms, hegemonic masculinity
and subordinated masculinities. Hegemonic masculinity is believed to be the
dominant masculinity as well as the ideal masculinity and is closely linked to
heterosexuality and power. Masculinity is dynamic and can be changed. It is
because masculinity is not inherent. Masculinity is in the process of becoming.
This means that the labeling of masculinity in someone does not just happen right
away, it takes a long time along with conflicts. |
