description | This study investigates derogation and euphemization strategies used by
the characters in Crash. In the case of writing, there is number of aims of this
study. Firstly, it aims to describe the use of derogation strategy. Secondly, it aims
to describe the use of euphemization strategy. Thirdly, it aims to describes
function of derogation and euphemization strategies used by the characters in
Crash. The data source of this study is Crash. From the data source, the
researcher analyzes and investigates the utterances used by the characters in the
film based on time sequence appearance which is dealing with derogation and
euphemization as the data.
This study uses descriptive qualitative approach, since it analyze the data
in the form of utterances descriptively based on derogation and euphemization
strategies found in the film. It attempt to describe phenomena that happen in
human life and it is hard to measure the data quantitatively since the data are in
the form of words, utterances, or conversations. In relation to derogation and
euphemization, Van Dijk's framework consists of two main discursive strategies
of 'positive self-representation' (strategy of in-group favoritism) and 'negative
other-representation' (strategy of derogation of out-group) ''which are materialized
through some discursive moves. The result of this study shows that there are
several derogation and euphemization strategies used by characters in Crash film.
First, the derogation strategy is used through some discursive moves such
as: actor description, consensus, empathy, evidentiality, humanitarianism,
implication, norm expression, number game, and disclaimer. Second, the
euphemization strategy is used through some discursive moves such as: actor
description, authority, consensus, self-glorification, polarization, and illustration.
Those discursive moves are manifested through the use of a particular lexicon
where it indicates how someone makes the choice of words on the word
possibilities that are available. Third, the use of derogatory and euphemism words
certainly can not be separated from the reason why these words are used, it is
associated with the function. Generally, the function of derogation is to humiliate
the opponent, emotive reaction to the anger, disappointment, or something
unexpected and undesirable, thus eventually bringing the addressee into disrepute.
Related to euphemization strategy, the functions found in the data include: hide
the facts, show respect, satirize, showing concern, convey information, criticize,
and warned. that where such functions are used to provide positive label in-group
favoritism. |
