Summary: | A case-control study of plasma viscosity as a risk factor for normotension glaucoma
(NTG) to determine the contribution of plasma hyperviscosity, as one of NTG risk
factors has been conducted. The subjects were divided into groups of NTG and the
control group, each 30 persons with gender representation at the age of 18-40 years
old. Plasma viscosity, fibrinogen, albumin, globulin of every individual were
measured. The collected data were analyzed by multivariate analysis using logistic
regression.
Fibrinogen concentration of NTG patients were not significantly different from the
control (OR 1.157, 95% CI 0.40 to 3.34, p = 0.787). Albumin concentration of NTG
patients was also not different from the controls (OR 2.59, 95% CI 0.91 to 7.34, p =
0.071). Although globulin concentrations of NTG patients were significantly different
from the control (OR 7.25, 95% CI 0.82 to 64.42, p = 0.044), statistically it was not
enough to conclude globulin as NTG risk factor. NTG patients have higher and
significantly different plasma viscosity values than the control (OR 8.61, 95% CI
2.56 to 29.1, p = 0.001).
In conclusion, plasma viscosity proved to be one of the risk factors of NTG.
