description Territorial disputes, border disputes among them, are a major source of conflict between two or more states. The existence of it can cause an armed confrontation as territorial possession is important for the status, existence and sovereignty of a state. As neighbouring countries Cambodia and Thailand also have a border dispute regarding the land around the Preah Vihear Temple. The Indonesian government, mainly in the person of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Marti Natalegawa, mediated the conflict when Indonesia took over ASEAN's rotating chair in 2011. The aim of this thesis is to answer which mediation stages took place and whether the mediation effectively reduced the tension between Cambodia and Thailand and played an important role in solving the border dispute. To answer these questions data was collected by studying literature. The research showed that the following mediation stages took place: (1) initial contact with the disputing parties, (2) the collecting and analyzing of background information and (3) the building of trust and cooperation. The research further showed that the mediation did not have a positive effect on solving the border dispute.
