As Deterrence Efforts Against The United States" is to explain the controversial
discourse of Iran's nuclear program which is still being a discourse in
international security politics. Iran's nuclear program again received
international attention when Iran announced in 2002 to resume its uranium
enrichment. Until 2011, Iran has been enriching uranium significantly, so that
the U.S. suspects Iran will develop nuclear weapons. Through this perception,
the U.S. give economic sanctions on Iran unilaterally in an effort to pressure Iran
to halt its nuclear program. However, Iran keeps afloat on its policy to continue
its nuclear program which has been several years operated.
Iran�# ´$$»$%·¸ to maintain more its nuclear program by neglecting the
economic sanctions from the U.S. is not without reason. Borrowing the
deterrence theory proposed by Spiegel, the author do elaborates and analyzes
this Iranian nuclear issue with a security approach. Since, in the realists view,
convincing the safety of a state in an anarchic international system is the most
important factor above all else. Economic sector and others can be protected if
the country's security is guaranteed. Therefore, as the rational actor, Iran see its
nuclear program more important as an effort to ensure the safety from all
potential external threats.
In the final section of this paper, it has been elaborated how the U.S.
geopolitically is very threatening Iran's security. Then, the existence of Israel in
the Middle East is in fact the close ally of the U.S. adds validity of the argument
that Iran currently needs deterrence efforts against potential threats from the
U.S. and Israel. This section also elaborates how Iran makes choices in
determining its policy between retaining its nuclear program or even halts its
nuclear program. Through this graphical presentation of "Iran
chooses strategy", it will be understood why Iran would prefer the policy to
maintain its nuclear program. |
