capitalistic interests to get economical benefit. Commodivication and advertising
progress had changed politics to become a kind of show business, and sensational
aspect has become a major part for gaining economic. Press existence as a critical
public sphere begun eliminated when private interest dominate it.
This research attempts to find press functions as a critical public sphere
using qualitative and descriptive method. Jurgen Habermas' ontology of public
sphere is used to find the essence of public journalism. Interpretation is needed to
find the essence of public journalism for Habermas never wrote or discuss it
specifically. Habermas has analyzed public sphere and press in his book The
Structural Transformation of Public Sphere. As a library research, data was
collected as it connected with the sources of research object. Collected data was
analyzed to find the true meaning of journalism.
The final result of the research will give a basic stand point for ontology of
journalism that useful for science progress, both for philosophy and
communication sciences. Public journalism shows that people shaped by their
life's purpose. In this case, a person is not viewed as a member of a community
but as a citizen protected by the law. Information appeared by press showed many
dimensions and interests. Journalism itself is not neutral one, although it must
playas a public sphere which took sides rationality for encouraging emancipation.
Press must functions as a critical public sphere as it was. Press must be directed as
struggling media, aspiration, expression and public opinions transmitter, and
defender of emancipation interest. |
