| description | This study aimed at describing 1) linguistic units from English in Indonesian
texts of sports, 2) their orthographical changes, 3) the linguistic units by kinds of
sports, 4) their meanings and changes, and 5) explaining reasons and functions of
their uses. The linguistic data were taken from sport articles in an Indonesian
newspaper of 2010 and 2011, three Indonesian books of sports and one
Indonesian-English dictionary of sport terms. Since forms of linguistic units are
determined by their internal linguistic contexts and their external contexts, the
linguistic data were linguistically and sociolinguistcally analized.
The results showed that linguistic units borrowed from English in the
Indonesian texts included words, phrases and clauses of different types. The
borrowed words found in this study including loanword, loandblend and loanshift
experienced conditionally orthographical and phonemic changes partially or
totally through alterations, ommission and mutation of graphemes, and ommision,
addition as well as modification of sounds. The orthographical changes were not
due to the domain of the texts but standardization. Whereas, the changes of the
English phrases and clauses were mainly on their components, that were reduced
and changed their order. The result of this study also showed that although some
adaptation to the system of Indonesian words has been made, some deviation from
the system still emmerged, such as some loanwords not pronounced normally as
the words written in such graphemes in Indonesian, having phonotactics
uncommon in Indonesian words.
Semantic changes experienced by English loanwords in this study were words
with polysemy changed into monosemy, word classes changed, meanings
extended, meanings redundant, meanings shifted, and plural meanings changing
into singular meaning. This study also revealed the meanings of some borrowings
frequently reflected in the Indonesian texts were not covered in KBBI 2008.
The reasons for using the borrowings were lexical gaps due to the arrival of
foreign culture, well-known English terms, direct quotations, texts from foreign
sources, apposition of English terms translated into Indonesian, the speakers�
English knowledge and attitude towards English. English borrowings of sport
registers were mainly used to designate kinds of sports, people involved in sport,
sport arena and instruments, sport actions, sport championship, rules, scoring,
penalty, and sport clubs. The borrowings held expressive, conative, referential,
phatic, poetic, and metalinguistic functions in Indonesian texts of sports.
English borrowings in Indonesian can be uncontrolled if the Indonesian
speakers are too tolerant to use English in their Indonesian texts, effortless in
using Indonesian, and imposing to use English even though the components of the
speech act do not dictate them to use it. The borrowings whose forms do not
conform to Indonesian linguistic systems may disrupt the Indonesian linguistic
system, and this will ultimately erase Indonesian characteristics. |
