Description
Summary:Since jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus Lam.) was introduced to Java Island about 2000 years ago, this fruit tree has been utilized with various purposes in villagers life until now. Researches for variability of jackfruit were conducted not only from morphological aspect but also from genetic aspect in India and Bangladesh, origin region of jackfruit. However, variability of Indonesian jackfruit has not been known. Information about variability and traditional uses of jackfruit population need to be recorded, especially in Java Island where the urbanization is more accelerated than other Islands and more than 60% of Indonesian population live, before various jackfruit population and local knowledge are vanished. The information is very important for conservation of land race and breeding economic cultivars. Objectives of this research are to obtain information about morphological variability, fresh fruit quality, and local knowledge about folk plant uses of jackfruit, then discussed relationship among the information and gave advices for jackfruit cultivation and the breeding. 125 jackfruit collections were observed to obtain morphological information and fresh fruit quality throughout Java Island. By using principle component analysis and cluster analysis, all sample trees were categorized in 5 clusters based on fruit morphology and in 4 clusters based on sensory attributes. From one cluster based on sensory attributes, 5 trees which produce high quality fruits were selected.
