| Summary: | Now that is done by using socio-pragmatic approach. This research is aimed at describing
the discourse structure, the aspects of speech event, and the functions of the discourse of
Metro TV�s English news program Indonesia Now.
This research applied a qualitative method that produces results in the form of
description. The object of this research is the discourse of Metro TV�s English news
program Indonesia Now. The data were collected through downloading the video of the
news program from Metro TV, watching and listening attentively to the utterances of the
news broadcaster, and transcribing the utterances into the form of transcription.
The findings of this research show that Indonesia Now has four elements that build
it as a whole unit of discourse, they are lead, opening, body, and closing. Lead presents
the summary of some news stories that are going to be presented later in detail in the
body of the news discourse. Opening is used to greet and to welcome audience to the
news program Indonesia Now. Body is the main part of Indonesia Now since it is the part
in which news stories are presented in detail. Body consists of some news stories that are
divided into nine different segments. Those segments are Indobiz, Market Reports, Fact,
Asia Watch, Spotlight, Pop Life, Calendar, Destination Indonesia, and Feedback. Each
segment presents different topic of news story to the audience. Closing ends the sequence
of the news discourse of Indonesia Now. Those four elements form three different
discourse structures of Indonesia Now. What differentiate the three structures are the lead
part and the segments that are present in the body of the news discourse of Indonesia
Now. Some different editions have different discourse structures.
Seen from some aspects of the speech event, Indonesia Now is a spoken writing
discourse broadcasted through an audio-visual media. It is presented to the audience with
the aid of teleprompter that helps the news broadcasters to read the complete narration of
the news stories while looking directly at the television camera. That device helps the
news broadcasters to deliver the news stories smoothly in good structured sentences since
they have been prepared before in the form of complete narrations. The use of English in
delivering the news program and the content of some segments presented in Indonesia
Now make the news discourse intended only for certain audience that are educated and
that come from high social class
