Summary: | Richard Rogers is an architect who pioneered High-Tech architecture
with the aim of exploits technology and machinery in his architectural works. The
popularity of Rogers buildings is never lost and those buildings became a
landmark in big cities, such as Lloyds Building in London and Pompidou Centre
in Paris. The phenomenon of Rogers buildings especially with its inside-out
characteristic is interesting to be studied, to see more clearly how technology and
machinery can be integrated in architectural design and creates an successful
building like Rogers done. The purposes of this research are to understand
Richard Rogers theories, concepts, principles, and design methods, and to see
how its applications in Rogers architectural works.
This research used Contenr Analysis method to explore more deeply
about Richard Rogers architectural ideas. This research consist two main parts,
the first part are to explored theoretical works about Richard Rogers to create
theoretical framework from Rogers theories, concepts, principles, and design
methods. The second part are to verified that theoretical framework with Rogers
architectural buildings that choosen based on variety of buildings, construction
timeline, building scale, and based on completeness of buildings data.
The result of this research is the core of Richard Rogers architectural
ideas. Rogers design theories are problem-solving technology and building as
a machine, which developed as technological imagery and meccano models
concepts. As a more specified elaboration from his design concepts, Rogers
applied design principles which are legibility, efficiency, impermanency,
flexibility, lightweight, and low-energy. Rogers main design method as his
design characteristic is inside-out exposed.
