description Indonesia is a country with high biodiversity, one of them is Pteropus vampyrus, also known as kalong kapauk. Kalong kapauk is a wild animal that is categorized as flying mammals with sufficient population in the wild (CITES, Appendix II). Macroscopical description of the kalong kapauk brain (Pteropus vampyrus) as a mammal which has flying capability and hang upside down while sleep and eat has not been studied yet, therefore it is necessary to be studied. The purpose of this study is know the anatomy of kalong kapauk macroscopically, to complete the anatomy data of wild animals in Indonesia. Five kalong kapauk taken from Central Java area used in this study. Before the kalong kapauk dissected and the brain taken, it was anaesthetized with ketamine 20 mg/kg bodyweight and xylazine 2 mg/kg bodyweight. In the state of deep anaesthetized, the kalong kapauk was perfused physiological NaCl solution intracardially. After the blood drained out from the body, the solution were replaced with formalin buffer 10% until the body fixed well. The brain prepared and observed macroscopically, the pictures of brain, and then analyzed descriptively and the brain sketch was made using Corel Draw X6 software. The results of this study showed that cerebral hemisphere didnt have sulcus and gyrus clearly. There was only one well developed paraflocculus lobe on the cerebellum. Brain stem and cranial nerves were similar with other mammals. It is possible that the well developed paraflocculus lobe on the cerebellum support the balancing capability of kalong kapauk so the bat was able to sleep and eat in the upside down position. The conclusion of this study the sulcus and gyrus of cerebral hemisphere are not fully developed but paraflocculus lobes are well developed.
