Description
Summary:Ruminant Toxocariasis is a disease caused by a nematode, Toxocara vitulorum. This disease is found mainly in a tropical region, in calf of less than 12 months old. The disease is transmitted transplacentally and transmamarily in ruminant. It can cause diarrhea and emaciation. Severe infection results in intestinal obstruction and even death. Ruminant Toxocariasis infection in calf will disappear along with the increasing age of the calf. The disease has never been reported in Boyolali. The objective of this study was to reveal the prevalence of toxocariasis in the district. This current study is a part of a larger study on calf toxocariasis in Central Java. The total of 303 calf samples was obtained randomly and proportionally in a multistage strategy from farmers in the district. Fecal specimens each calf was examinated for the existence of ruminant toxocaral egg by means of floating method. Variables of calves and raising management was obtained through ebservation and interview with the respective farmer using a questionnaire. Association between the infection and each variable was verified using chi-square test and its strength was measured as odds ratio and relative risk. The result show that the prevalence of toxocariasis in calf in the district of Boyolali is 11,9%. Calf of less than three month old is the only variable associated with ruminant toxocariasis infection in calves in Boyolali.
