| Summary: | Impacted mandibular third molar extraction is one of temporomandibular
joints disorders causal factor. The symptoms such as pain and limitation of mouth
opening in mandibular movements are showed 1 week after extraction. The
limitation of mouth opening can be examined using temporomandibular opening
index. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of impacted mandibular
third molar extraction on the temporomandibular opening index.
Fifteen patients from oral surgery clinic of RSGM Prof. Soedomo FKG
UGM, who wanted to extract their impacted mandibular third molar were
involved in this experiment. Active and passive mouth opening were measured
before extraction and 1 week after extraction. Mouth openings then were
calculated into the temporomandibular opening index�s formulation.
Results of paired t-test showed statistically significant difference (p < 0.05)
between temporomandibular opening index before extraction (2.25% ± 0.74%)
and 1 week after extraction (13.49% ± 4.02%). As for the conclusion, the
decreasing of active mouth opening as a symptom of temporomandibular
disorders on impacted mandibular third molar extraction has increased the
temporomandibular opening index. |
