Description
Summary:Background : Dyslipidemia is a lipid disorder which is characterized by an elevated or reduction of lipid fractions in plasma. The common dyslipidemia problem is hyperlipidemia which is marked by an increase in triglycerides, total cholesterol, LDL, and a decrease in HDL. The condition leads to hypercholesterolemia which become a factor contributing to the onset of degenerative disease such as coronary heart disease. Seaweed is a potential biological resources for health. However, seaweed has not been used optimally for the welfare of the community until now. Seaweed (Eucheuma spinosum) contain carrageenan which is suspected of having fiber and hypocholesterolemic effect because the fiber can bind to bile acids and cholesterol in small intestine. Objective : The aim of this study was to assess the effect of E. spinosum powder on total cholesterol and triglycerides level in Sprague dawley rats with high fat diet. Method : Quasi-experimental research design study with pre and post test with control group design was performed on 25 males Sprague dawley rats aged 2 months. Group (K+) is a control with standard diet, Group (K-) is a control with high fat diet, and treatment groups (A,B,C) were given high fat diet and E.spinosum powder in different concentrations, that were 5 mg/ 200 grBB
