description Porphyromonas gingivalis is one of the bacteria that cause periodontal disease. Fimbriae as hydrophobic surface of Porphyromonas gingivalis are indirectly responsible for the attachment of bacterial cells on the hydrophobic surface of the tooth pellicle. Lime (Citrus aurantifolia) peel contains some chemicals compound such as polifenol which has antibacterial potential. The purpose of this research is to determine the effect lime(Citrus aurantifolia) peel extract in Porphyromonas gingivalis hydrophobicity reaction. Lime (Citrus aurantifolia) peel was extracted by maceration. Concentration 5%, 10%, and 20% of lime (citrus aurantifolia) peel was obtained by dilute with distilled water. A pure culture of Porphyromonas gingivalis was diluted with physiological saline to obtain 108CFU/ml. Effect of lime (Citrus aurantifolia) peel extract on Porphyromonas gingivalis cell surface hydrophobicity was measured by exposing bacterial cells to various concentrations of lime (Citrus aurantifolia) peel extract. A solution of hydrocarbons, hexadecane is used to represent the hydrophobic surfaces in the oral cavity. Optical absorbance of the bacterial cell surface was measured by using spectrofometer with 550nm wavelength. Results of this study showed that exposure of lime (Citrus aurantifolia) peel extract with a concentration of 10% and 20% shown decrease significantly the hydrophobicity of Porphyromonas gingivalis. These data support the hypothesis that Citrus aurantifolia peel extract concentration of 10%, and 20% decrease Porphyromonas gingivalis hydrophobicity.
