The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of composition ratio of paraffin and beeswax on baseplate wax brittleness. Paraffin (Pertamina, Balikpapan), beeswax (SEA, Yogyakarta), carnauba wax (Bratachem, Yogyakarta) and damar (Kalimantan Tengah) are used in this study. Specimen sheets (76,2x 6,35x1,5 mm) were made of 5 different baseplate wax compositions comprising of weight ratio percentage between paraffin and beeswax of 70 : 20 (K I), 72 : 17,5 (K II), 75 : 15 (K III), 77,5 : 12,5 (K IV), 80 : 10 (K V) (n=5). Samples were immersed in the waterbath at a temperature of 37�C for ten minutes and then the brittleness was tested with cold bending method. The samples were bent manually through 180� in 10 seconds round a stainless steel mandrell. The angle through which the waxes were bent before cracking occured were recorded. The data were analyzed statistically by the Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests (α=0,05). The mean percentage of bending angle of baseplate wax composition I to V were 46,00± 6,90�, 36,50± 3,43�, 27,00± 6,39�, 26,40± 4,47�, 18,10±5,21� respectively. The Kruskal-Wallis test showed that ratio of paraffin and beeswax significantly influenced the brittleness of baseplate wax (p<0,05). The Mann-Whitney test showed significant results between all compositions, except group III and group IV showed no significant difference. The conclusion of this study is the ratio of paraffin and beeswax influenced the baseplate wax brittleness. Baseplate wax with higher paraffin to beeswax ratio had a higher brittleness rate.
