description Zanzibar is an autonomous state within the Republic of Tanzania. As an autonomous state, Zanzibar has its own president, parliament, and judicial branch on its own. Even then, it has to follow the rules the union government has established. When the union government decided to change their party system from one party to multi party, Zanzibar Government, though reluctant, followed the order. The result had been disastrous. Since the first multi party election in 1995 until the third in 2005, the people of Zanzibar has seen conflicts as the result of unsatisfactory elections. The conflict in 2001 even categorized as the deadliest political conflict in East Africa. Nevertheless, the question remain is why the elections in Zanzibar could ended in conflict, although the rest of Tanzania didnt? Using the theory of social conflict, conflict escalation, and conflict in state formation, this paper is aiming to analyze conflicts in Zanzibar to determine the cause of the escalation. The result shows that an unhealthy relationship between ethnic groups plays as a strong factor in causing the conflicts. Not only that, the lack of preparation by the government for the election also causing many problems and resulted in complaints and protests from the opposition party, which led to the conflicts.
