description Calcium phosphate cements are widely researched as biomaterials for bone augmentation and regeneration. Alpha tricalcium phosphate (α-TCP) is one of example of calcium phosphate cements. It has some advantages, such as mouldable, in vivo hardening, and biocompatible. Setting of α-TCP cements starts immediately after mixing of the cement paste and cement is set after a few minutes. Setting time of α-TCP cements is influenced by several factors, for example type of liquid as α-TCP powder mixture. In this study, effect of phosphate solution on setting time α-TCP cement was investigated by employing two phosphate solution: 0.2 mol/L Na2HPO4 and 0.2 mol/L NaH2PO4. The cement powder (500 mg) was mixed in a glass plate with liquid (250 μl). After 1 min of mixing at room temperature the paste was applied in Teflon mould with an inner diameter of 10 mm and a height of 2.5 mm. The initial setting time at 37oC were determined with Gillmore needle. Mean and standard deviation of setting time with 0.2 mol/L Na2HPO4 and 0.2 mol/L NaH2PO4 respectively are 23.56±2.34 minutes and 14.12±2.01 minutes. Independent T-Test showed significant effect between two groups on the setting time with 0.2 mol/L Na2HPO4 and 0.2 mol/L NaH2PO4 (p<0,05). It was concluded that α-TCP cement with NaH2PO4 solution had faster setting time because the acidic pH of the solution so the dissolution process occurs earlier.
