Summary: | Plankton species diversity can be one of indicators to identify the stability of
mangrove organism comunity. This study was conducted in the mangrove area along
the estuarine of Donan River, Cilacap. The aims of this study are (i) to know
plankton species diversity in mangrove habitat of Donan River, and (ii) to identify
the correlation between plankton species diversity and the physic chemical water
qualities and vegetation density of the mangrove habitat.
The mangrove area was classified into three zones based on the distance from
estuary, which are distal zone (5-6 km landward), medial zone (2,5-3,5 km
landward), and proximal zone (0-1 km landward). In each zone, 12 plots of 5 x 5 m
2
were established. Tree and plankton densities and water qualities such as pH,
temperature, clarity, salinity, dissolved oxygen were recorded as well as were
measured.
The results show that distal zone has the highest species diversity of plankton
which is 2,36. Species diversity index of medial zone is 2,10 and proximal zone is
2,33. The index value that is correlation two indicates that the plankton community
structure is in stable condition. Parameter that have strong correlation with plankton
species diversity is clarity. Parameter that affects plankton species diversity is
vegetation density (X1) with the regression model is Y = 1,314 + 0,98 X1. Mangrove
habitat of Donan River classified into good water class quality (class B) which low
polluted.
