Hydroxyapatite is low soluble and very stable therefore inhibits bone remodeling rate. Carbonated hydroxyapatie is bone substitute alternative material besides HA. Recent studies showed that CHA has similarity with biological apatite and better osteoconductivity than HA. Biomaterial implantation always be followed by inflammatory response, foreign-body reaction, and fibrous encapsulation. The aim of this study was to compare quantity and quality of fibrous capsule after subcutaneous implantation of CHA and HA in Rattus norvegicus. Fifteen male rats (Rattus norvegicus, 3-4 months age, 200-275 gram) were involved in this study. Left side of rat�s back was implanted with CHA, while the right side was implanted with HA. Each 3 rats was terminated after 5, 7, 14, 21,28 implantation day to collect the implantation area for histological preparation (Hematoxylin-Eosin staining). Quantity and quality of fibrous capsules were evaluated by 3 observer using trinocular microscope (magnification of 400x, 6 field of view). Results showed no significant differences on fibrous capsules quantity and quality after CHA and HA implantation at same periods (p � 0,05). The fibrous capsules quantity and quality of CHA and HA inter-implantation periods showed no significant differences. The results described that CHA and HA implantation can lead similar subcutaneous tissue responses until 28th day postimplantation.
