description | Background: Along with age, older people experience a variety of physical and
mental deterioration. For example, health problems associated with fluid balance
in elderly healthy men.
Objective: To determine differences in the effect of the Gold Standard (GS)
isotonic drinks and Plain water (PW) for hydration status also water balance in
elderly men by looking at the profile of urine (color, clarity, urine specific gravity,
pH).
Methods: This study used a cross-over design with washed out period of 4 days.
Number of respondents initially 20 healthy men with age 61-74 years who meet
the inclusion criteria, but ultimately 18 people following this research. Profile urine
checked 7 times, ie when before intervention, each 3 days according to type of
group intervention. This examination using specific reagent strips to see the
profile of urine. Data analyzed descriptively and statistical analysis is the chi
square test, kolmogorov smirnov, Mann-Whitney test, independent samples t test,
Wilcoxon test and paired t test.
Results: There are no relationship between intake of GS and PW to colors and
urine clarity (p>0,05). Before the intervention, subjects had an average pH of 5,44
+0,511 and average urine specific gravity of 1,021 +0,008. While the GS group
had an average pH and urine specific gravity is 5,79+0,429 and 1,020 +0,003.
Nevertheless, for the PW group had an average pH and specific gravity of urine
on 3 days intervention are 5,77 +0,511 and 1,020 +0003. There is no difference
in pH and urine specific gravity between GS and PW groups (p>0,05). In the GS
and PW groups, there are difference effect before intervention with an average pH
for 3 days the intervention (p<0,05). However, both the GS and PW groups had
no differences influence urine specific gravity before intervention with 3 days
intervention (p>0,05).
Conclusion: GS isotonic drinks better than PW (Plain Water) as GS drinks tend
to improve hydration status and fluid balance seen from the difference in the
average pH and urine specific gravity though there is no significant difference. |
