Description
Summary:Background: Malnutrition is a global health problem, especially in developing countries. Malnutrition causing a decrease of cellular immunity, T cell lymphocyte count, small intestines damage, and increase atrophy of lymphoid glands so that making the host more susceptible to infections. Probiotics can reconstitute the intestinal and stimulate the immune system. Objective: The aim of this work was evaluate the effects of Yogoat on the improvement of IEL count, villous height, and crypth depth in Wistar rats model of protein energy malnutrition. Methods: Rats were divided into 2 groups according to the dietary intake received (standard diet 100% and 50% dietary restriction). Each group was divided into 2 group according to Yogoat administration during renutrition and compared to well-nourished and malnourished rats. At the end of treatment, rats anesthetized with chloroform and ileum was collected after 7 days post renutrition. Then the IEL count, villous height, and crypth depth were counted. Statistical analysis were performed by Two Way ANOVA with 95% Confidence Interval. Results: 50% diet restriction can lead to moderate protein energy malnutrition. The type of dietary intake affected the difference in the body weight, IEL count, villous height, and crypth depth significantly (p<0,05) compared to each group during the diet. The administration of Yogoat as renutrition in well nourished group did not affect the difference in the body weight, IEL count, villous height, and crypth depth significantly compared to well nourished control group that did not receive Yogoat. But Yogoats administration in malnourished group increased significantly compared to malnourished control group that did not receive Yogoat. Conclusion: The administration of Yogoat could be a good adjuvant diet to increase the IEL count on ileum of protein energy malnutrition Wistar rats model, but it could not improve the villous height and crypth depth in Wistar rats model of protein energy malnutrition.
