description The removal debris via the use of toothbrush and toothpaste is a mechanical method of denture cleansing. There are various types of abrasive materials used in contemporary toothpaste which is effective in the removal of stain, for example aluminium oxide. But, aluminium oxide can lead to greater abrasiveness due to its hardness. Surface roughness on denture is one of the main problems in the oral cavity because it can lead to adhesion of microorganisms. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of the toothpastes containing aluminium oxide on the surface roughness of heat-polymerized acrylic resins. This study used 32 samples heat-polymerized acrylic resins measuring 20 x 10 x 3 mm. After the initial roughness measurement, the sample was divided into 2 groups, which is brushed with toothpastes containing aluminium oxide (n = 16) and brushed with control toothpastes (n = 16). Brushing was conducted in a brushing machine with a rate of 356 brush strokes per minute for 250 minutes. The final roughness was measured using surface roughness measuring instrument. Results data were analyzed using t-test with a significance of 95% (α = 0.05). The results showed that group which is brushed with toothpaste containing aluminium oxide caused more surface roughness than group which is brushed with control toothpastes. Based on the analysis of the t-test, p-value < 0.05 showed that there are significant differences of the increasing value of surface roughness between the two groups.
