wedding dress, Hollyebok which was worn by the court family and the Yangban
people, in the era of Joseon dynasty (1392-1910) in Korea. The method of research is
conducted through library research, by using several books which contains information
about Hollyebok. This study aims to observe the meanings of life which contains in the
patterns and colors of the Hollyebok.
The scope of the study is the translation of a Hollyebok which was worn by the
royal family and the Yangban people. Shortly describes the function of every part of
the clothing. Parts of the Hollyebok are: (1) Sokgot, (2) Noreun Baji, (3) Jogeori, (4)
Hwarot and Wonsam, (5) Samogwande, (6) Daedae and Gakddi, (7) Boseon, (8)
Mokhwa and Kkotsin, and (9) the Hollyebok�s accessories itself. This study uses the
semiotic theory. Descriptive method is used to analyze the difference of patterns and
colors in the Hollyebok�s accessories. Indigo, white, red, black and yellow (gold) are
the primary colors of Hollyebok. The meaning of life which gained from the patterns
and colors of Hollyebok is the implementation of prayers and hopes from the parents
for the brides who wore them. Phoenix, dragon and butterfly are considered as the
iconic Hollyebok patterns. While clouds, lotus, subok writing and ssangheui heui are
considered as the symbolic patterns of Hollyebok. |
