Description
Summary:This research describes the habitat selection by the yellow crested cockatoos (Cacatua sulphurea parvula) on Komodo Island, Komodo National Park. Yellow-crested cockatoos was selected as the object they are one of endangered species found at Komodo Island, Komodo National Park, and has also been designated as a priority species which must be monitored by the Directorate General of Forest Protection and Nature Conservation, Ministry of Forestry. The existence of yellow crested cockatooss habitat necessary to be studied because it isolated by the sea that surround Komodo island. The aims of this research were to determine the biotic and abiotic components which affecting habitat selection by the yellow crested cockatoos, know the character of the vegetation is utilized by the yellow crested cockatoos, and know the characteristics of the selected habitat yellow crested cockatoos at the microsite level on study site of Loh Liang, Loh Lawi, and Loh Wau valley which representing characteristic valey in large and wide watershed (Loh Liang), narrow and elongated watershed (Loh Lawi), and small watershed (Loh Wau). Each study site have two types of vegetation namely open deciduous forest and savanna woodland vegetation. To determinate whether habitat selection is occur or not, chi-square test was applied, whereas for testing the habitat variables affecting the probability of the presence of yellow crested cockatoos used logistic regression. Study of habitat selection by yellow crested cockatoos was conducted three months, from January to March 2013. Chi-square test showed that there were a habitat selection by yellow crested cockatoos on study site of Loh Liang, Loh Lawi, and Loh Wau valley. Type of vegetation selected by yellow crested coocktoos on three study site is open deciduous forest. Components of habitat affecting habitat selection on three study site are distance to food source and humidity. Characteristics habitat of yellow crested cockatoos on Loh Liang valley have a distance to the source of feed from 0 m to 27,78 m and have a relative humidity from 73,30 % to 78,70 %. Characteristics of yellow crested cockatooss habitat on Loh Lawi valley have a distance to the source of feed only 0 m and have a relative humidity from 73,80 % to 75,50 %. Characteristics of yellow crested cockatooss habitat on Loh Wau valley have a distance to the source of feed from 0 m to 31,80 m and have a relative humidity from 71,20 % to 76,60 %. Based on logistic regression analysis, the probability of the presence of yellow crested cockatoos increased with increasing proximity to food source (location of research field at Loh Liang, Loh and Loh Lawi Wau valley). The probability of the presence of yellow crested cockatoos decreases with the decrease the number of relative humidity (location of sudy site at Loh Liang, Loh and Loh Lawi Wau valley).
