description Background:Depression in elderly often hard to detect. While depression can cause another problem that will decrease their quality of life. Recently several studies examined relationship between depression and BMI. The researcher anticipated that BMI can predict depressive symptoms. Objective:To find out the correlation between depression and level of Body Mass Index of elderly in Saturday Clinic Faculty of Medicine UGM. Method:The subjects of this study are elderly overweight BMI who attend Saturday Clinic program in Faculty of Medicine Universitas Gadjah Mada. Samples taken in this study are 55 elderly people over 60 years old. The method used are an analytic survey research with cross sectional approach, the study try to explore how and why the health phenomenon happens, then analyze the correlation between the dynamics of the phenomenon, by means of approach, observation or data collection. The analysis method used is descriptive analysis and analysis of the Chi-Square (2) odds ratio. Result and conclusion:Based on the analysis the depressed elderly are 12 people (21%) and those without depression are 43 people (78%). BMI levels of underweight elderly are as many as 5 people (9%), elderly with BMI normal are 31 people (56%), elderly with overweight BMI are 15 people (27%), and elderly with obesity BMI are 4 people (7%). The results of the statistical test Chi-Square (2) and the 95% confidence level obtained p-value 0.004 with significant results, meaning that there is a relationship between depression and BMI. From the test results between depression and BMI (underweight and obesity) is obtained p-value 0.635, meaning that there is no correlation between depression and level of underweight. From the test results between depression and BMI (normal and obesity) is gained p-value 0.008, meaning that there is a relationship between depression and normal BMI. From the test results between depression and BMI of (overweight and obesity) obtained p-value 0.003, meaning that there is a relationship between depression and BMI overweight.
