description Periodontitis is the inflammation of the supporting tissues of the teeth caused by specific microorganisms or groups of specific microorganisms , which results in the destruction of periodontal ligament and alveolar bone with increased of periodontal pocket depth. Curettage is a procedure in the treatment of periodontitis . Curettage was cleaning the inflamed granulation tissue on the lateral wall of periodontal pocket. Topical antimicrobial applications are often more effective as an ajuvant after scaling and root planing and curettage for treatment of periodontal disease. Hyaluronic acid has antimicrobial effects, especially very effective for bacterials Agregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans , Provotela oris , Porphiromonas Staphilococus gingivalis and Staphylococcus aureus. Metronidazole is very effective for sub- gingival anareob bacteria which has important role at periodontitis such as Agregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans periodontitis and Porphiromonas gingivalis. This study aimes to determine differences in the effectiveness of antimicrobial hyaluronic acid 2% and metronidazole gel 25 % after curettage in chronic periodontitis . Subjects are patients with chronic periodontitis with periodontal pocket depth of 4-6 mm. There were two groups of the study was application of hyaluronic acid 2 % and metronidazole gel 25%, each group with 15 points periodontal pocket. Data retrieval count of anaerobic bacteria colony sub gingival plaque made on day 0, 7th and 21st. Data analyzed with mixed design ANOVA with 95 % significance. Mixed design ANOVA test results showed a decrease in sub gingival anaerobic bacteria colonies in both treatment groups (p < 0.005), but there is no difference between the two groups (p > 0.005). Antimicrobial hyaluronic acid 2% and metronidazole gel 25 % are effective in reducing the number of colonies of anaerobic bacteria in chronic periodontitis . The conclusion of this study is no difference the effectiveness between of antimicrobial hyaluronic acid 2 % and 25 % metronidazole gel against anaerobic bacteria after curettage in chronic periodontitis .
